Psalm 41:1-4, 13 NIV
Blessed are those who have regard for the weak;
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.
The Lord protects and preserves them—
they are counted among the blessed in the land—
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
I said, “Have mercy on me, Lord;
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
Praise be to the Lord , the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.
Psalm 41 makes a promise. Those who look out for others, who cannot care for themselves or protect themselves, will find The Lord healing them and caring for them as well.
This isn't a new concept. Those who give special attention to the weak are not better than any other person who keeps the law of Moses. All who keep the law of God are given the same promise for covenant faithfulness.
Covenant faithfulness is rewarded with prosperity and health, peace and protection. Unfaithfulness leads to consequences. Unfaithfulness leads to sickness for instance. That is why the psalmist says, "I have sinned against you." He assumes that because he is sick, God has cursed him for breaking covenant.
Sin isn't just moral mistakes we make. Sin is the condition of this fallen creation. There is no question that we have sinned. All fall short of the glory of God. Often when Jesus healed people he said, "Your sins are forgiven you."
God does heal those who cry out to Him. God has acted in Jesus Christ to remove the hold sin has on this creation. We are given freedom from sin's power through faith in Christ.
Have regard for the helpless. It's what God's people do. You will find yourself helped with the providence, healing, and protection of God. Good provides for His faithful servants.
